Under a hundred-year-old beech forest, a guide will take you on a 2-hour tour of Bibracte's heyday, its public buildings, craftsmen's buildings and dwellings. He'll explain the work of the archaeologists, who you're likely to come across on the site in summer, and show you their latest discoveries.
GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM
Duration: 1h30
Dates: February to November
Prices 2024 :
. Up to 12 people: fixed price of €138 .
. More than 12 people: €11.50 per person
At the foot of the archaeological site, the museum presents the history of Bibracte, the Gallic capital, and current archaeological research.
The upper gallery, which forms the first part of the permanent exhibition, presents the two hundred or so oppida (vast fortified sites) that suddenly took over the Celtic world towards the end of the 2nd century BC. At the end of the Iron Age, this original urban phenomenon suddenly transformed a vast area of Europe into a territory structured by a network of towns, leading to the founding of Bibracte around 100 BC.
The museum's lower gallery examines Bibracte's archaeological record in minute detail - the ramparts, the quarters, the craftsmen's workshops and houses, the public spaces, etc. - to show that the development of the oppidum bears witness to a radical change at a key moment in history: between the founding of Bibracte and its abandonment a century later, Gaul became Roman.

SELF-GUIDED TOUR OF THE SITE
200 hectares of forest, 100 hectares of ancient town, at an altitude of 821 m. A site crossed by the GR 13 and numerous hiking trails. All this is available to you free of charge, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
Stroll around freely, with viewpoints and signposts providing information about what's in front of your eyes and under your feet.
Ask at the museum reception desk for a tour map. It will give you a choice of three tours of different lengths.
Or download the La Boussole app, which you can access directly from your smartphone.
La Boussole helps you to find your way around Mont Beuvray and provides a selection of Bibracte's main sites and viewpoints.
