Go back in time in the footsteps of archaeologists to discover the daily life of the inhabitants of Bibracte and of Celtic Europe in the process of urbanisation.
Built in 1995 at the entrance to the site by the architect Pierre-Louis Faloci, the museum paints a portrait of Bibracte, an ephemeral city, in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries.
The upper gallery, which forms the first part of the permanent exhibition, presents the two hundred or so oppida (vast fortified sites) that suddenly took over the Celtic world towards the end of the 2nd century BC. At the end of the Iron Age, this original urban phenomenon suddenly transformed a vast area of Europe into a territory structured by a network of towns and led to the foundation of Bibracte around 100 BC.
The lower gallery of the museum examines the archaeological record of Bibracte in great detail - the ramparts, the quarters, the craftsmen's workshops and houses, the public spaces, etc. - to see that the evolution of the oppidum bears witness to a radical change at a key moment in history: between the founding of Bibracte and its abandonment a century later, Gaul became Roman.

By following one of Bibracte's guides, discover all the secrets of the Aeduan capital that disappeared under the forest.
Take advantage of the knowledge of our guides to discover the progress of research on the Gallic town of Bibracte, which is buried under the forest and whose remains extend over nearly 2 km. 2000 years ago, its population reached several thousand inhabitants.
Under a hundred-year-old beech tree, a guide will take you back to Bibracte's heyday for two hours, showing you the public buildings, the craftsmen's buildings and the dwellings. He will explain the work of the archaeologists, whom you will probably come across on the site in summer, and show you their latest discoveries.
